Family Tree

Now that you’ve discussed your child’s ethnic background, create a family tree together.  If you have a family bible, chances are you have a rough draft.  You can get as detailed as you’d like with this great project.

One idea is to take a very large square of burlap or fabric and draw in permanent marker a tree, then the branches.  Beautiful sequins can be glued onto the burlap, making the branches or the trunk stand out.  Be sure and name your tree.

If possible, try to find out your family’s coat of arms.  This is intriguing to both adults and children.  Also show your child how they can obtain further information about their family roots.  If you are unable to locate a coat of arms, then create one and pass it down to future generations.

When labeling your tree, try making the names special by using objects that match that ancestor’s favorite activity, hobby, food, etc.

Interpreting your last name might also enhance this fun project.  Go grab the dictionary and begin by breaking your name into syllables.  Or, do a search of your last name on the Internet.
