Insect Collection via Journal

This is a particularly interesting activity that will bring out the biologist in your child.  Forget the messy, and sometimes cruel, aspects of those mounted insect boards, and go on an exploration of nature with your child.

Before heading out, determine which insects you hope to see and note these.  Log your findings along with the date into the journal.  Compare this data to future outings.

Your child may enjoy drawing a black and white sketch of the insect by the data.  Some questions you may want to seek answers to include:

 What insects are indigenous to the area?

 What are the current weather conditions?

 What are the mating practices of the insects?

 Do they have camouflage abilities?

 Where are their favorite spots – by water, on the greenery, in the tall grass, on trees, shrubs?

 Do they stay in groups?

 Do they fly, crawl, or wiggle?

 What are their special sounds?

Ant Farm

Ant farms can be purchased at a hobby shop, at a pet shop, or ordered online.  Start out small and watch the colony grow!
