Horsing Around!  Horseback Riding

Treat your child to a real horseback ride.  Call to find the stables in your area.  Many state parks offer horseback riding for a minimal fee per hour.

Don’t forget to tour the stables.  A young cowpoke would probably be thrilled to take you on the tour.  Some of the things you may want to ask include:

•  How is a horse’s hooves manicured?

•  How is their hair groomed?

•  How do they sleep?

•  Do they bite?

•  What are some of the sounds they make?

•  What do they eat and how much?

•  Are they moody?

•  How do you saddle a horse?

•  How do you mount a horse?

Some other activities you may want to include:

•  Obtain a book from your local retailer or library on equines.  

•  Find or draw a picture of a horse and decorate it with swatches of fur, fabric, rope and wiggley eyes.

•  Discuss the famous horses in history such as Trigger and Fury.

Don’t forget to take a souvenir home with you.  A lucky horseshoe would be a great reminder of your day.
