Discover What You Can’t See

Discover what’s hidden beneath the fallen leaves, such as tiny insects, bugs, or nuts and discarded seeds from the tree. Acorns and pinecones add beauty to any project and can be an asset to any holiday decorating that you plan.

As with spring wildflower viewing, look for recommended fall foliage trails in your area through your local Chamber of Commerce.

If you can’t get out to enjoy the Great Outdoors for some reason, have your child join you at the computer.  Using a major search engine, look for fall foliage sites as well as wildflower sites that contain pictures.  Most can be zoomed in on to be enlarged and can be quite awesome!

Ask your child to try to identify the different species of trees, plants and flowers.

Plant a Tree

Of course, Arbor Day would be THE perfect day for planting.   Incorporate other learning activities into the event such as counting tree rings to determine the life of a tree.  (Each ring represents one year.)

It is interesting to note that tree rings are not evenly spaced.  A tree may have thrived one year, then lagged in growth the next.
