Gingerbread House

There isn’t a kid around that doesn’t love gingerbread houses.  If you don’t have the time to make a house from scratch with your child, then try picking up a ready-made kit that takes only minutes to assemble.  There are also some very nifty gingerbread house molds on the market that might help the ‘from scratch’ process.

A quick Gingerbread House can be made by using graham crackers and very thick icing made from powdered sugar and a few drops of water.  The trick it to make the icing very thick, so it acts like a glue.

If you experience in building your house, try propping it up with large marshmallow, gluing the sides around the stacked marshmallows.  Finish out the house using lightweight candies, such as red-hots, and colored mini-marshmallows.

Finish up by telling your child the story of Hansel and Grettel.

Plant a Tree

Of course, Arbor Day would be THE perfect day for planting.   Incorporate other learning activities into the event such as counting tree rings to determine the life of a tree.  (Each ring represents one year.)

It is interesting to note that tree rings are not evenly spaced.  A tree may have thrived one year, then lagged in growth the next.
