Flavored Oils

Making flavored oils is not only fun, but once you’re done you have something that you can use for a long while afterwards!

Start out with some pretty, clean glass containers, either clear or colored will do.  You’ll need a top to seal the oil; corks work very well for this purpose.

Next, purchase your favorite oil.  This will be used as a base for your flavored oils.  There are a lot of choices on the market, so be sure and point out these to your child.  Explain the different sources for the oils and how they differ in taste.  Pick up some fresh herbs, lemons, and peppers from the produce section.

Once you’re home, begin filling the bottles with the oils and other ingredients of your choice.  If you have some spices that you think would add to the flavor of the oil, then by all means, experiment.  A couple of drops of food coloring may be used to add to the beauty of the oils.

Fresh herbs, such as dill and rosemary make excellent choices for homemade flavored oils.

Homemade oils tend to go rancid much faster than commercially purchased ones because they aren’t fortified with preservatives.  Therefore, plan to use your oils as soon as possible after preparation.  Oils also make a beautiful gift.
