Salt Maps

Basic Salt Map

4 cups of standard grain salt

1 Tablespoon of food coloring

Glue stick or liquid school glue (in the plastic container)

1 Map on thick posterboard or cardboard– either pre-drawn, or one that your child has created

Your child will love coloring the salt!  Place a box of salt into a plastic bag, add the food coloring, and you’ve got the perfect element for an old fashioned salt map.

Baked Salt Map

4 cups of flour

1 cup of standard grain salt

¾ cup of water

1 Tablespoon of food coloring

Mix above ingredients; knead for about a dozen minutes.  Dough will be smooth and workable.  If dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour: if dough is too stiff simply add a few drops of water.  Next:

•  Mold your dough, then fit your ‘map’ together on a baking sheet.

•  Pop into a pre-heated 325-degree oven and bake for about 45 minutes to 1 hour.  

•  Finished product will be hard.  

•  Cool completely, then paint.
