XIII. MATH ACTIVITIES

Store

Collect your penny jar, then set up a play store using your child’s play figures.  Use some ‘real’ food from the kitchen, such as small florets from the heads of broccoli, a few beans, and popcorn.  Mark each item with a price or prop a small ‘sign’ in front of them noting the cost.

Next, have your child go shopping.  Let them pay for the ‘purchases’ at the checkout counter.

Savings Bank

This can be done at any age!  Even adulthood!  Pick out a pretty ‘savings’ jar that your child can keep in their room.  

Allow them to do small things around the house to earn money for their jar.  Give them your extra change from time to time and they will see how quickly the jar builds.

Next, redeem the change with your child by using one of the automated change converters.  These can generally be found in the finer grocery stores.

This activity will teach your child the value of saving, the value of earning money, and how to convert that money into dollars.
