The Chimney Sweeper, a Short Love Story
"Grandfather! What do I do now?" she asked, quite breathless.
He was standing by the ladder, anchoring it as she had made the long climb.
He yelled up to her, "The bird's nest is stuck in the top! Can't you see it? Plunge the devil out of it!"
Phillip continued to gaze through the binoculars. It appeared that Jack was yelling up at the ninny - probably telling her what an idiot she was for making the potentially fatal climb.
And he had thought this was going to be a boring three days with more snow on the way. What rotten timing for a vacation with a freak snow storm in store. Nothing like the crazy neighbors to keep one entertained.
Hoisting herself closer to the brick spout, Heather situated her footing against the wall of chimney bricks. All was well until she leaned forward to deliver the first plunge, then the air was filled with a black fog.
Coughing and sputtering, she couldn't make out the hand before her - much less anything else. Amid her panic, she lost her footing and felt her back scrape against the icy roof as she slid down, down, down - landing in a tall snowdrift, propelled into a sea of darkness.....
"Good gosh - the ninny just slipped!" Phillip jerked out, his mouth dropping as he watched her tumble off the roof, clawing at the shingles along the way.
The next thing he saw was a puff of white powder. Thank heavens she had landed in the snowdrift!
Best make his way over to see if the ninny survived.....
