She was especially taken with the Victorian garden that contained a myriad of formal beds oozing with a solid mass of color. A mock statue of a King and Queen graced this waterless garden that was threaded with spirals of cobblestone pathways. A large checkered area was designated for playing the game of Human Chess.

Paige had shared several entertaining stories when they had toured this garden. She and Hollace were always graced with the positions of King and Queen during the festive events when the game was played. She assured Cie that she had thrown a party in the garden before her departure at summer’s end.

The Knot garden was an interesting sculpture of green intersecting lines of lavender filled with herbs and small flowers. There were four archways leading east, west, north and south, both in and out of the gardens.

Paige had promised her a tour of the remaining gardens after she settled in and Cie was planning on taking several photographic shots during her stay.

The interior of the castle was as impressive as the exterior, filled with more nooks, crannies and secret passageways than Cie could count. The furnishings were ‘traditional’ for a castle; dark rich velvets, luscious satins, hand woven rugs, silver flagons, candles, famous paintings, even an authentic suit of armor, her sister telling her it had been worn by a cousin to Sir Lancelot.

Her mind drifted back to the present and she commented to Paige as she eyed the picturesque valley in the distance, “Hollace has done quite well for you and Cookie.”

“Yes, quite well,” her sister echoed nonchalantly, sitting back into the chaise. He has plans to expand his practice in the autumn. Oh, how proud I am of him! Such a wonderful man. So….so foreign. So, sexy. So perfect.” She paused and grinned like a cat dipped in hazelnut cream then continued with, “His practice is doing so well. He has the patience of a priest around a group of virgins, you know? My Hollace. Such a hard worker. A…a miracle worker! Nonetheless, even he cannot do it all. His time with Cookie and me has diminished greatly over the years. Therefore, he has asked a Swedish physician to join him-”

“Look, mum! It’s him!” Cookie yelled out, pausing from her bouncing to address her mother. Her small face looked quite strained, matching her young voice. Obviously, the stranger in the distance affected her in some way.

Like Cie, Paige had curiously risen from her chaise but once she discerned Cookie’s point of interest she resettled.

“Cookie! Stop pointing for heaven’s sake! I don’t want him riding over here,” Paige scolded in an angry tone. Under her breath she drawled, “Dark demon of hell that he is.”
